St. Lucia: Our Community

Guardians of the Pitons

In 2004 The Pitons were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and a place of outstanding universal value to humanity. Perched on the volcanic ridge between The Gros and Petit Pitons, Ladera is the only resort sited on this magnificent UNESCO site. It is an honor that we cherish, and a call to stewardship that we passionately and instinctively uphold, because this exceptional place is also our home.

Sustainability

Ladera was hand-built in perfect harmony with the Piton landscape. Green Globe certified, we strive to promote a sustainable eco-system within the boundaries of Ladera. Wood, stone and clay, sustainably sourced on property, are used for construction and transformed by our master craftsmen and local artisans into decor and furnishings you will marvel at throughout Ladera. Additionally, almost all the food we serve at Ladera is sourced right here on property and from local organic farms. We conserve water with our rain-harvesting and storage program and achieve exceptional energy conservation using solar generated heat for hot water and LED lighting throughout the property.

Jako Sanctuary

The St. Lucia parrot (Amazona versicolor), french name Jacquot or Jako, lives only in the rainforests of St. Lucia. Now designated the National bird of St. Lucia and protected from hunting, the recovery of this highly endangered parrot is a remarkable conservation success story from just 100 parrots left in the wild in 1975 to around 500 in 1996. However, the St. Lucian parrot still faces serious threats as its habitat is cleared to make way for banana plantations. Here in the Ladera tranquility of our pristine rainforests, we have begun adding more trees and plants with the fruits that the Jako loves, with the hope of creating a natural sanctuary for this rare treasure of St. Lucia.

Building a Strong St. Lucia

Together with our community we are working to build a brighter future for all St. Lucians, with a special focus on education. Ladera adopted and supports two local schools in the Soufriere area financially, with annual donations, leading construction projects at the schools, and sponsoring sporting events and awards. Other initiatives include unwavering support for St. Lucian artists, craftsmen and our cultural traditions.

Ways to Get Involved

There are lots of local initiatives that would love your support, whether through in-person participation or by making a donation. It’s a great way to give back and really get to know the people and culture of St. Lucia.
